Moon Unit Gingrich

I thoroughly support the space program. I am no astrophysicist or astro-anything, but I recognize that some of our greatest recent innovations came from the space program, and our ability to live on as a species may well be directly tied to our ability to colonize other planetary objects. I don’t for a minute believe that in my lifetime I will see any of this, although I still dream of looking at Earth from outside of orbit and bearing witness to the amazing sight of the planet from beyond its confines. But I’m a realist, and the odds that I will ever see that are diminishing, not that they were ever great to begin with.

I’m glad to see Newt Gingrich show his support for the space program. It’s just a bloody shame that he’s done it so manipulatively. Newt was in Florida, and he said that he knew that America would have a permanent moon base by the time of his second term in power. That almost sounds like a great thing, doesn’t it? Only it wasn’t.

Daily Bible Reading Facepalm #59 – Jesus Gets Snarky, Abe Cuckolds (Again), God Ignores Me And Makes Me Sad

The gig last night was fantastic with a surprisingly good turnout! My buddy Chuck E. Deadman recorded the set for us (and our last set), and hopefully we’ll have a live recording soon enough. This would make me pleased as punch. I finished my orientation with CJSW yesterday and am now officially a radio station volunteer. Tonight I get to go out and see BDFM, one of my favorite local bands, and tomorrow I will be bouncing at a show featuring Bone Thugs ‘N Harmony, one of those bands from my teen years that I loved. It’s a good weekend.

Today’s reading, which won’t stick to most dental work, comes from Luke 11.29-54, Genesis 20 and Psalm 13. From past experience, I have a feeling that this reading will be about as much fun as emergency dental surgery. I have to keep reminding myself that there is a reason I’m reading this awful book.

Daily Bible Reading Facepalm #58 – How To Pray, Gay Rape And Incest, God Protects Us

I’m really happy for today’s gig, and also my second day (or two) of training to volunteer at CJSW. Busy night, but an awesome night. Anyone looking for a fun way to spend their Thursday night should come down to The Distillery and catch our set.

Today’s reading, which should not be taken without first consulting your physician, comes from Luke 11.1-28, Genesis 19 and Psalm 12. Teach me, Jesus! Show me the way! Or at least tell me things I already know and pretend like your simplistic and bipolar morality is new and not a natural adaptation of social animals!

A Question For The Faithful

I know that a few of my readers are faithful members of a variety of religions. I recently heard about a Gallup Poll that got me curious. I have a short series of questions that I would love to hear answers for:

1. Do you believe in heaven (or a similar afterlife)?

2. How does your belief/lack of belief impact you?

3. Do you believe in hell (or a similar, shitty sort of afterlife)?

4. How does this believe/lack of belief impact you?

Hey Rick: My Thoughts On Rick Santorum And Abortion

I just want to make sure I have this straight, Rick. You say that women who are raped should be refused abortions because it’s a gift from God. That’s your stance. I just want to be absolutely sure that I get it before I continue. Okay, good, I’m feeling good about what I’m about to say.

Fuck you, Rick Santorum.

Whew, that really does feel good! So let’s take an imaginary woman, say at the age of 19. She is a high school graduate who is beginning her University career. One night, she is walking home from a study session, and a guy beats her, drags her into an alley, and rapes her violently. He ejaculates, an uncommon but not by any means impossible scenario, and leaves her to die.

Daily Bible Reading Facepalm #57 – Jesus Tells Stories, Abraham Haggles God, God Rains Down Sulfur

I am extremely pleased right now. My buddy Greg, whom some of my readers will remember as the long-time sound guy at The Distillery who moved to the east coast to get some post secondary music education, has sent me three of his compositions, which I am listening to now. I like to pretend to be a musician, but there’s no way that I will ever be able to come up with anything as pretty as what I am listening to right now. Good work, Greg!

Today’s reading, which soars with eagles despite working with turkeys, comes from Luke 10.21-42, Genesis 18 and Psalm 11. They won’t be anywhere NEAR as enjoyable as these three songs, I can assure you.

Can My Skeptical Noodle Survive Non-Skeptical Movies?

I watched Practical Magic last night. It was such a cute show, one of The Lovely Lady’s favorites, and it made me think about one of my big pet peeves as a skeptic. People always ask me how I can enjoy a movie about witches or possessed people or what have you because I don’t believe in the thing the movie is based on. And I can say that there are some movies that this really bugs me with, like The Exorcism Of Emily Rose.

I had to think about that for a bit. Why would a movie about witches and love spells and all that jazz be something that wouldn’t bug me, but an allegedly true story about a girl who was either possessed or who had some kind of epilepsy irritated me to the point of wanting to cock-punch the director?

Daily Bible Reading Facepalm #56 – Jesus Chooses People, God Renames Abe, God Hides

I can see a blue sky out my window. It is huge, and where it touches the earth in the distance, I can see beautiful mountains. The snow is melting, the weather is beautiful, and life seems to be not kicking me in the slats today. This is either going to be a wonderful day, or life is going to remember me and start the slat-kicks shortly. I’m hoping for the former, but I wore a jock today just in case.

Today’s reading, which absorbs tough spills and costs less than the leading national brand, comes from Luke 10.1-20, Genesis 17 and Psalm 10. We’re still in the same books, so I imagine we’ll get the same outcomes from our reading, namely more about how neat Jesus is, more about how God <3′s Abram, and more about how God’s just generally super awesome.

Forget Mexico

I have never been to Mexico. I’m sure it’s lovely, and I’m sure that it would be a wonderful place to wake up, especially in some ridiculous five star resort on a beach somewhere. But I am not about to go there, and I strongly suggest people seriously consider boycotting the place.

Several years ago, Chris Morin died in Mexico. Chris was a part of my local music scene, a guy I knew and liked. We weren’t close friends by any stretch, but he was a guy I respected. When Chris died, it was determined to be a suicide, but that never sat right with me. Since his death, there have been a string of Canadians murdered and beaten in Mexico. I don’t believe that “Canadian” is the key here by any stretch, but certainly I have been passively paying attention, and I don’t like what I hear.
