About Marc "Skinnyhead"

Used to be a preacher and proselytizer for the dark side, now I immerse myself in teh intarwebs, podcasts and documentaries in order to expand my mind and hopefully raise my kids with skeptical rational minds as well.

Argentina <3′s Gay Marraige

In a historic victory over the prominent Catholic and Protestant ideologies, the Argentinian senate has made gay marriage legal within it borders. While 85.5% of Argentinians identify themselves as Catholic or Protestant (wiki), that didn’t seem to stop the government from making a decision based on 21st century science and morality

Of course, Canada made this landmark decision a few years back, so … Welcome to the club, Argentina! Impromptu street parade, anyone?

Skepticator

I’m an avid listener of the Edmonton based podcast Skeptically Speaking, not only for the sultry tones of it’s host Desiree Schell, but also for the engaging discussions and interviews.

I loaded up Episode 56 in anticipation of the Baba Brinkman interview, but recieved a bonus bit of information about a skeptically focused news feed aggregator called Skepticator. This service pulls blog posts and news entries from skeptic and science feeds into one handy location. Skepticator features a fairly speedy search engine and if you’d like to subscribe to a single RSS feed with content from all 290 featured sources, Skepticator’s got you covered.

Of course I registered MeddlingKids with the service, so you have another option for keeping up to date with our ramblings as well.

Addiction-Free Pain Killers

A “significant breakthrough” for those who suffer from chronic pain … researchers have found that a molecular substance similar to capsacin (which gives hot peppers their heat) is released at the site of pain in the human body. Using SCIENCE!, they have been able to successfully block the molecule and significantly eliminate pain. The cherry on top is that the new medication is completely addiction free.

This article from Science Daily sums up the research nicely.

M-Kids Is Over 100 Strong!

Hey MKids,

I love celebrations. Rites of passage are a big part of being human, and while the Meddling Kids may not celebrate Ramadan, Christmas or Easter quite a fervently as our neighbors, we still like to raise our glasses in celebration of reaching a milestone.

Meddling Kids has officially reached 100 members! This is not including all of you who subscribe to our RSS feeds or read our posts via Twitter and Facebook.

Thanks for reading, and an special thanks to those of you who comment! In fact, if you are a regular reader or subscriber why not comment on this post to let us know who’s out there?!

We’re looking forward to hearing from you and truly appreciate everyone’s support!

Ann Coulter makes waves in Canada

Looks like another American right-wing-nut is making their way across the border and causing media frenzy in the True North. Ann Coulter, who I’m sure you all know and love-to-hate, is ending her 3 university Canadian tour today. On Tuesday at the University of Ottawa she was met with fierce protest and outrage. I’m not sure if the American media even covered the protest, but I’ve read a bit of Ann’s personal take on the event, and it differs greatly from the images and stories from the crowd at the event. She claims the protest was violent and hate-filled. That the protesters forcibly shut down the event. Do these students look violent to you? Some of these people are smiling and just happy to be out in the brink evening chill of a Canadian spring!

The real story from the University of Ottawa is that Coulter’s organizers canceled the event themselves and that the protest was peaceful. Also, local news sources confirm that the crowd was not violent and other than some uncharacteristically Canadian screaming and yelling, Coulter was not in danger.

This got me thinking: Has she never been met with protest before? Does
she really think a crowd of Canadian youth was going to eat her alive?

Her next stop is today in the conservative capital of the country, Calgary, Alberta.  Like other American conservatives before her, she is welcomed here with open arms. Calgary welcomed George Bush with open arms a few years back and will also give Sarah Palin the red carpet treatment in a few months.

Calgarians aside, Canadians have an intense love of free speech, and I believe that Ann
has the right to speak her mind wherever she chooses if people want to
hear it. I also believe in the right to assembly and to protest. People
feel she is spreading a message of bigotry and hate, and they have every
right to voice that opinion.

MKids: Sponsored by Jesus!

Hey MKids,

Jim and I had a quick discussion the other night about the use of Google AdWords on this site. The idea is to help fund the growing needs of this site and maybe even implement some improvements along the way. The downside to this is that, given the nature of our content, AdSense ironically chooses to display religious-based ad’s! I’ve set the ad’s to block any religious content, but these settings take time to process. In the meantime this site is sponsored by World Vision, The Church of Scientology and JesusIsTheDifference .. i just threw up in my mouth a little.

My apologies.

ps: if anyone has any creative ideas on how to fund improvements without using advertising, or has experience optimizing AdWords, we’re very open to suggestions. Thanks!

Rational Anthems: Humanism Spits Back

One of the only things I miss about being a Jesus Freak, besides the massive amounts of food consumed after church every Sunday, was the collective experience of Worship Night. These events invoke repetitive lyrics, droning music to invoke an emotional response, solidify the group-think and have an addictive affect on the participants. Terrifyingly beautiful in their cacophony, they conjure emotions … tears … sometimes screams of mental anguish or pure ecstasy.

I was thinking of one of these worship nights last Saturday while standing on the boundary of a punk/metal mosh-pit last Saturday. The band, Exit Strategy, consisted of the weirdest demographic of middle-aged white dudes and a tiny young asian girl screaming guttural cries for reason, equality and justice. Now I’m not punk, grind-core, hardcore, nerd-core or even pop-punk, but this is the kind of message that gets my heart pumping. I’m a guy who loves musical expression to the point where I used to call it my new religion. Tears frequently show up on my cheeks during a majestic rock-your-socks-off guitar riff, stellar symphonic crescendo or some super-tight a capella harmonies, and thats exactly what happened last Saturday night there on the boundary of that beer-soaked mosh-pit. I felt the same feelings, shed the same tears, and felt the same emotions of closeness and oneness as I did back in church.

Now normally I’d go directly into a diatribe about how your brain doesn’t differentiate religious experiences from secular experience (heres some info), and how these facts explain how my group religious experiences have the same affect on me as going to a rock concert, but thats another post.

Amino Adornment! Made With Molecules

dopamineEvery nerdy science-buff loves wearing nerdy science stuff on their person. For me it’s stuff like my favorite t-shirt (Particle Physics Gives Me A Hadron) or the Flux Capacitor t-shirt my fiance gave my during the first month of our relationship (awweee … sweetest gift ever!).

But for some, maybe it’s a kick-ass necklace or chain shaped like your favorite molecule! Raven Hannah, founder of Made with Molecules, makes some amazing jewelery shaped like dopamine, caffeine and my personal favorite serotonin :) Looks like her years of dedication as a Molecular biologist at Yale have really paid off!

So if you’re looking for a gift for a science geek, or for yourself, check out the site!

Ch Ch Ch Changes!

Hi everyone! Just a quick note to tell you what you’ve already figured out: The site looks different again :) We use WordPress to help us manage this blog, and the last theme was riddled with weird element placement and link issues. Also, I need to upgrade to a newer version of WordPress, and the last theme wasn’t compatible.

There may be a few tweaks and changes over the next few weeks as well as we work toward bringing you some exciting new content!

I apologize for the switcheroo, and if you have any feedback whatsoever please feel free to comment!

Cheers,
