Take That, Ma!

I’ll admit it, I hate making my bed. I find the ten seconds it takes at the end of the day to kick the blankets into a somewhat comfortable position way more efficient than the annoyance of having to make the bed each day. My mother, of course, did not quite see things my way, triggering epic battles of will I usually lost. But as a grown-up, I have to admit that making the bed is not a regular feature in my life.

And it turns out I’m right. Making your bed isn’t just sissy, it’s begging for allergic reactions! VINDICATION: MINE!

See, I went over to the JREF website this morning and caught this article called What Everyone Knows. It’s awesome, and dispells a few common sense things that we all know, but we’re wrong about. And one of those things is that making the bed is a good idea.

What’s at issue isn’t the esthetics of a made bed. Of course, they just look snazzier. It’s a question of mites. As this article from the BBC’s web site tells us, we’re learning that an unmade bed will dry out more, and thus reign death down on the mites that live there. Dust mites are ridiculously tiny and don’t really do much to bug us, but their dookie is an allergen and can trigger asthmatic reactions. When beds are made and that moisture is maintained, the little bastards thrive. More dust mites means more dookie, means more allergens.

So take that, ma. I ain’t making my bed anymore. HA!

  1. I’m still making my bed, it’s an OCD thing. What if somebody drops in? They may judge me on my house keeping.

  3. My dog Winston has taken over my side of the bed now so he makes the rules. He insists that i don’t make the bed, and that his blankie is appropriately tousled at all times.
