Imagine for a moment that you have the ability to do an amazing thing. You have the ability to travel literally billions of light years to a planet orbiting some distant star. You can do this nearly instantaneously through the power of your astounding space ship. When you got there, what would you do? Close your eyes a moment and think about the answer to that question. Was the answer “Probe the rectums of hillbillies”? I didn’t think so. I would imagine that I might be interested in understanding the physiology of the life forms on the planet, as they would almost without a doubt be completely different to my own physiology. But if I had the technology to instantaneously travel through space and time like that, I’d probably be coming from a race so advanced that our means of evaluating the physiology would be much more advanced than shoving things up someone’s southern pucker.
Now, imagine that you have the ability to send a message to another continuum. What’s a continuum? Well, the one we’re most familliar with would be the space-time continuum. But in a post over at the JREF site, Harriet Hall (who is Not Impressed) describes an interaction with someone who assures her that the TV series Lost is accurate because of a message transmitted by someone from another continuum. Seriously, read the thing, it’s worthy of a giggle.
But my question is this. If you had this power, this amazing gift, and you were able to send a message to a whole ‘nother continuum, would you make it a series of numbers that to understand involved someone’s dreaming symbols, converting those symbols to analogies, using numerology and who knows what other magicks, and then noticing that the seemingly random result coincided with some New York lotto numbers? Wouldn’t you say something more to the point, like “Hello from a whole ‘nother continuum! It’s summer here!” or “String theory actually works! Trust us, the dimensions are there and in like a thousand years or so you’ll totally get it.” No, it would surely be better to provide incredibly random numbers that nobody could have discerned until AFTER the bloody lottery draw.
Next, let’s imagine that you are an all-powerful and loving creator. The creatures you invented and dropped in a garden to play eat an apple you’d left lying around, and thus violate your law. What would your reaction be to allow a deep rift to appear between your creatures and you, the implementation of hard labor, sin and punishment, and forcing women to be endure agony during procreation? Or would your reaction be to say, “You know, I guess I shouldn’t leave my bloody apples everywhere. I’m going to use the 7th day to intelligently design me up a cleaning service!”
Or maybe you’re an all-powerful diety who sends an angel down to talk to guy who writes down all the poetry that the angel gives him and turns it into a religion about how you’re really sweet and nice, but you want people to be good and believe in you. Then someone draws a picture, not of you, not of the angel you sent, but of the guy who you used to write the thing down. Would you approve of his wholesale slaughter? And if you were all-powerful, why could anything act in a way that wasn’t okay with you? If you gave us free will then you have to be prepared to have some people go a different way than you’d hope. That’s what free will is, and if you’re all-knowing then you know that.
Or maybe you’re an all-knowing God who wants to communicate his latest message to the people. In the past you’ve appeared as a burning bush, you’ve spoken directly with people, you’ve given mysterious signals, you’ve entered the dreams of the faithful, and you’ve even taken human form. How would you top that? If your answer was “give some hick con man six inch wide by eight inch long gold plates who will lean over them with a rock in a hat held so close over his face that he can’t see the damned plates”, then I think you’re maybe just teasing me. I think I’d just show up and be all “Hi, I’m God. I have a message for you, but before I give it to you, get a whole bunch of people and some photography gear and I’ll start doing the most amazing shit you have ever seen for the camera, shit you will see once and know for certain that I am the lord your god.”
I simply cannot understand why it is that these ideas are out there. It’s not that the ideas are ridiculous, which clearly they are, but that should be a warning sign for everyone. When an idea sounds like total crap, there’s a good reason for this. And so I’m going to make a list for you. It’s not a complete list by any stretch, but anything on this list is based on something so stupid as to be unbelievable. If you see anything on the list that you have always accepted, it’s time to move on to newer, better beliefs:
- Evolution isn’t real because when two dogs have sex they never make a cat.
- The entire universe revolves around the earth every 24 hours.
- Aliens visit us. All the time.
- Jews control EVERYTHING.
- Your company respects your contribution, and when it comes time to look at layoffs, you’re safe.
- An alien overlord named Xenu blew up his enemies with hydrogen bombs, and that’s why there is sickness.
- The earth is only a few thousand years old, and anyone who says otherwise is a liar and a communist.
- The pretty girl at the junior high school dance who’s standing by herself actually wants to dance with you.
- There is a growing movement based on the fact that Jesus was born on December 25th that says George Bush wants to dissolve the United States and create a New World Order.
- Big Pharma puts special drugs in their vaccines to murder the faithful and give your babies autism.
- The earth is flat, and NASA bloody knows it.
- We never landed on the moon and NASA bloody knows it.
- Satellites watch you while you barbecue and NASA bloody knows it.
- You can feel better if you believe that you feel better.
- God is real and makes a whole mess of sense.
There’s way more than that, but it’s a good start.
Jim
Jim,
You’re a moron and so is NASA! jokes
re: your list item : – You can feel better if you believe that you feel better.
I would agree with this statement. If I think i feel better then i do feel better. But I would clarify that just because i think I’m going to feel better and do feel better doesn’t necessarily mean that I AM better.

Plus i love the picture in this post … the one of the polar bear in a snow storm … really gets the imagination going, ya know?
I’m all for a positive attitude, but I was referring to the notion that all we need is a healthy mindset and we’ll never sicken ever ever.

Any of you people think, nope, I don’t think so….
The theory of “acausality” is part of quantum physics, as suggested
by the Nobel laureate, W. Pauli, (exclusion principle).
Another Nobel laureate who believes the mind/matter connection
is, Josephson, at Cambridge University.
There are many others….
If you did read, (can you?) the article, there are appropriate comments
from the research group at Princeton University.
In a world of Zombies, you here, fit….
I love the negative comments we get on here. Clearly, since we differ in opinion, we’re illiterate zombies incapable of thought. If I couldn’t read, how exactly did I write the post you’re so upset about?
I’m sure lots of really great people believe in the mind/matter connection. I bet some of them are much smarter than I am. I have never seen any evidence for it, and until I do it’ll remain a ridiculous notion to me. Is it possible I’m wrong? Sure. But like a good skeptic, I’m not going to just leap on your argument just because you used big words.
This post was about the ludicrous notion that Lost is real. I re-read it and saw nothing in it that helped your comment make sense. Acausality? How does that in any way relate to anything I wrote? If my understanding of the term (and I freely admit I’m not even close to expert in quantum physics) is correct, this is the concept where we say that something began from nothing. Rather than assuming that the Big Bang was caused by God or any other answer, acausality says that this was the start of events. I consider these arguments pointless. If/When someone comes up with a testable hypothesis for what happened before the Big Bang then it will answer itself, but until then we’re just speaking on conjecture and faith.
So just to clarify, are you suggesting that with positive thinking we can prevent cancer or AIDS? Despite your unrelated acausality argument and all your OMG UR STOOPED insults, that seems to be the only thing you said that relates to the topic (assuming that I can read, which clearly is a huge assumption). Just because some Nobel Laureate (or even a small army of them) believe something, does that make it true? Argument from Authority much?
I’m happy to engage in conversation with you on the topic, and if you have scientifically valid examples that show a link or a potential link between mind and matter, I’d love to read them. Your arrogance and lame attempt at insulting me aside, it’s nice to have a good debate, so if you’re capable of doing so, I’d love to see where this goes.
O.K., I’m a bit calmer now, so let’s discuss this.
First … Read the news article about the coincidence of events.
http://www.webspawner.com/users/cosmic/
In the tv show Lost, they use the term SOURCE, meaning that the energy or
the Island itself is the Source.
The news article also uses the term SOURCE.
Lost tv, uses the number 108 in the plot.
The news article uses 1080, which is a quantum number for energy, and
108 is also an energy signature….
These would be examples of “meaningful coincidences”- i.e., acausality….
What I’d like you to do is this: Come up with some appropriate questions
about the news article, based only on what you read, in other words, what’s
included in the article.
P.S. I just noticed from the Lottery results, the pick 3 NY number drawn this
evening was…..are you ready……108…..
The universe is tweeking, (fine-tune)…..
I’ll check back tomorrow….C-ya…

Just heading out, and will answer your questions on Friday….
A few comments though:
The numerology system is called Chaldean, copy here:
http://www.crystalinks.com/numerology.html
So, the 3 symbols are Ursa Minor, Ursa Major and Duck.
This is how it appears:
U R S A M I N O R
6 2 3 1 4 1 5 7 2 =31
U R S A M A J O R
6 2 3 1 4 1 1 7 2 =27
D U C K
4.6.3 2 =15
It was a cash “40″ lottery game, only 1 through 40 can be used.
So it’s…. 4.6.32. 15.31.27
Later….
We begin:
Firstly, Ms. Hall commenting on the Lottery coincidence of the episode in the Lost tv show.
(He says the subplot about the coincidences and “meanings” of the lottery numbers reflects something that has happened in reality.)
Not as you stated that, “Lost is real based on a lottery ticket in New York.”
Hall again: “He explained that “a series of numbers drawn in the NY lottery game, has been verified as a ‘message’ from another continuum, by senior researchers at Princeton University. This is a first scientific verification of that dimension of reality….”
If this was nonsense, there was no reason for the researcher to be so over-the-top
with her comments, and conclusions:
Dear Mr. De Laurence:
Thank you for sharing the description of your “meaningful coincidence” with us. It is an EXCELLENT example of connectedness between the subjective and objective domains of human experience, mediated by the symbolic language of numbers. In a very real sense, as was recognized by Pythagoras and his successors, this symbolism lies at the root of all science, including even the contemporary, whereby the human mind seeks to interpret in some tangible and communicative mode the intuitive insights gained from observing nature. The error lies in our FORGETFULNESS of the origin of these symbols.
Sincerely,
Brenda J. Dunne
Laboratory Manager
Hall: “Then there’s something about predicting a supernova, with references to Carl Sagan and Jung’s speculations about synchronicity.”
The star Kochab is long known in mythology, with references dating to 2467b.c.e.
It, and a companion star are called, The Guardians of the Pole.
As a red giant star it fits the profile as a possible/probable supernova, (exploded star).
One meaning listed for the term Kochab is: “Waiting Him Who Cometh.”
Hall: What would another continuum be, exactly? Is there an alternative to the space-time continuum? And how could a message be communicated from there into our space-time continuum? And why?
As Professor Kaku recently said: (Michio Kaku. Theoretical Physicist)….
“We are now on the verge of being able to detect signals from the eleventh dimension—signals from hyperspace. In the eleventh dimension, these four forces just melt together into one gorgeous theory that—if understood and proven—will allow us to “read the mind of God.”
Time- the continuum of experience in which events pass from the future through the present to the past.
Hall: My correspondent also cited Nostradamus and the concept of “acausal reality.” He quoted physicist W. Pauli as saying “In quantum physics, natural numbers are considered to be the ultimate structural element of being.” What does that even mean? Do the quantum physics textbooks say that? And how would that tie in with numerology?
Nostradamus, In a letter to Henry ll, mentions the Chaldean Alphabet, and, in fact
used it with his “quatrains.” (Ltr. dated 1558)
Number is considered the most primal archetype of order in the human mind, In
other words, it is pre-existent to consciousness. (Pauli/Jung 1952)
Since the remotest times men have used number to establish meaningful coincidences, that is, coincidences that can be interpreted.
There is something peculiar, one might even say mysterious about numbers. They have never been entirely robbed of their numinous aura. If, so a textbook of mathematics tell us, a group of objects is deprived of every single one of its properties or characteristics, there still remains, at the end, its number, which seems to indicate that number is something irreducible.
The sequence of natural numbers turns out to be unexpectedly more than a mere stringing together of identical units; it contains the whole of mathematics and everything yet to be discovered in this field.
Number, therefore, is in one sense an unpredictable entity.
It is generally believed that numbers were invented, or thought out by man, and are therefore nothing but concepts of quantities containing nothing that was not previously put into them by the human intellect. But it is equally possible that numbers were found or discovered.. In that case they are not only concepts but something more-autonomous entities which somehow contain more than just quantities.
Unlike concepts, they are based not on any conditions – but on the quality of being themselves, on a “so-ness” that cannot be expressed by an intellectual concept.
Under these conditions they might easily be endowed with qualities that have still to be discovered. I must confess that I incline to the view that numbers were as much found as invented, and that in consequence they possess a relative autonomy analogous to that of the archetypes.
They would then have in common with the latter, the quality of being pre-existent to consciousness, and hence, on occasion, of conditioning it, rather than being conditioned by it.
“man has need of the word, but in essence number is sacred.” Jung….
“our primary mathematical intuitions can be arranged before
we become conscious of them.” Pauli….
Your questions:
1. The numbers 108 and 1080 you mention… You describe 1080 as a quantum number for energy and 108 as an energy signature. I have already stated that I am no expert in quantum mechanics, nor am I that well versed in traditional physics. This is my own ignorance, so I’m going to need a bit more from you on the topic. What does the quantum number 1080 represent, what is this energy signature you refer to, how does they relate to energy, and how does they relate to the TV show Lost?
Answer: 108 TeV: The most-energetic known ultra-high-energy cosmic rays.
(High Energy Sources in Galaxies, Andrews, CERN 2008)
I can’t say that the writers of Lost knew about this energy number, but they
did use it to represent the energy field on the Island..
1080, or as scientists refer to it, 10^80th power, represents the estimated total
of elemental particles in the obvervable universe…..
Your question: 2. As far as acausality goes, I am operating under the assumption that you are referring to the concept of something that began from nothing.
No, the concept in physics and psychology of acausality, simply means the coming
together of unrelated events, a psycho-physical reality. See Pauli/Jung, acausal
connections in the space-time continuum. (google).
3. I’m confused about the article you linked me to making reference to July 8, 1993. Is this date important? Was that the date of the image posted? What is the image representative of? Is that supposed to be Ursa Major and Minor?
July 8th, 1993, was the published date, Bx Times Reporter….
The image was of another supernova. Kochab has yet to appear as an
exploded star.
Your question: You have done nothing to shed the light on these numbers. What do the numbers mean?
I’ll answer by example:
In 1983., Dec. The “message” that came through was: 1.7.8. 11:31 28.39….
These were the exact numbers drawn in the NY Lottery on 12.28.1983….
Add each sequence, and then count to the appropriate letter in the alphabet.
You will have a question on this….
I can’t explain God, or even terms others use, like: Psyche, Soul, etc., etc…
I’m just sharing what I know, what I firmly believe, and have experienced for
many years.
We both realize that those who claim special ability, psychics and others
are just in it for the buck. But psychic relativity is something else,
and that I can explain, by example….
Why am I/we being pointed to a star? The answer
is obvious, at least to me. It’s REVELATION….
“such is the nature of reality, that anyone can experience that
which is least understood.”
