I’m sure you’re aware of the story of Constance McMillen, the girl who wanted to go to the prom in her small town of Fulton, Mississippi and wasn’t allowed because of her sexual orientation, or more accurately, her refusal to hide her sexual orientation. Well, it gets far, far worse. Both Skepchick and Pharyngula have comments on the latest news, which is that the jerks in her school created a new prom that would allow her to attend.
But Jim, you say, that’s not a jerk move. Well, as I said, it gets worse. They actually created two proms. One was for her and a few of the freaks they didn’t want ruining their prom and the other was for the rest of the school. And the kicker? They didn’t tell her. The entire student body, the faculty, and all the townsfolk who were in on it kept it entirely on the down-low. So she was utterly humiliated, and the jerks won.
Hey. Mississippi. I’m talking to you here. Your hateful redneck sons and daughters accomplished a lot with these antics, and it will be years before you understand just how horrible you look because of this. The arrogant pride you show in relishing your ignorant ways has been shown on the global stage. All I can say is I hope there is a cumuppance for this. Constance will never get her prom, but the disgust she holds for each and every one of you will propel her away from your miserable hick town and into a life much more embracing of her. I will not say that she is destined for greatness, I do not know her. She may in fact never accomplish much of anything in her life, but leaving you in her dust will be a major accomplishment.
And I do hope that there is some legal discrimination case that can be brought against the people involved, though sadly I don’t see that being possible. Maybe there could be some other recrimination, like a plague or a flood or the town’s supply of Kwelada drying up. A boy can dream.
Jim
