Just read this report over at Effect Measure and felt that sharing it was a good call. It seems that a company called Basic Food Flavors Inc., Las Vegas has been shipping out hydrolyzed vegetable protein even after it heard the news that it was contaminated with Salmonella Tennessee. This is a fairly widespread flavor enhancer in a whole mess of products.
In their press release, the FDA have a few excellent suggestions on how to avoid problems, including a link to their recalled products database.
Me, I can’t help but sigh. We put so much trust in these corporations to keep the foods we eat safe, and they so clearly don’t safeguard that trust. I hope the book gets thrown at both Basic Food Flavors and any of their customers who don’t bother testing their ingredients.
