Virus In The DNA

Some interesting news from Science Daily today. The article title says it all: Evolutionary Surprise: Eight Percent of Human Genetic Material Comes from a Virus. The article details how Bornaviruses (BDV) appear to have infected reproductive cells and remain in our DNA, which they believe may be the cause of schizophrenia and mood disorders.

Another example of how we’re constantly finding surprises in our DNA. The article states that previously it had been assumed that the only viruses that could impact reproductive cells in this fashion were retroviruses, but that opinion appears to no longer be valid.
